About
I use cognitive science theories and methods to help design health information technology that is safe, easy to use, and supports the information needs of the users. My emphasis is on human factors engineering and cognitive support for health care providers and consumers. Recently, I have begun to examine the implications of viewing information as meaningful data. This view immediately indicates why informatics (the study of information) is so difficult: although humans excel at processing meaning, computers are very poor at it. Automating the processing of meaning, as well as providing tools that help humans better process information, are two key challenges for making effective use of the growing amount of information around us.
